Pretreatment Program

The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility has established an industrial pretreatment program as required by the General Pretreatment Regulations of the National Pretreatment Program for large and small publicly owned treatment works. The program is a critical component of the 1972 Clean Water Act. It is designed to:

  • Protect the infrastructure of publicly owned treatment works.
  • Reduce the level of toxic pollutants and conventional pollutants, such as solids, heavy metals, and high-strength wastewater, discharged by industrial and other non-domestic wastewater sources into municipal sewer systems and the environment.

The Evansville pretreatment program requires local industrial users that discharge wastewater into the City’s sewer system to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local pretreatment standards and requirements. Failure to do so could result in a substantial penalty.

Significant strides continue in reducing the discharge of toxic pollutants into our sewers and waterways since the establishment of national pretreatment programs. The programs, partnerships between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and publicly owned treatment works, have successfully reduced the effects of pollution on human health and the environment.
