EWSU to Conduct Hydrant Flushing to Maintain Water Quality, Fire Protection
Evansville Water and Sewer Utility will begin flushing fire hydrants throughout the water distribution system as part of a routine water system maintenance program. The hydrant flushing will begin next Monday, August 24, through Friday, September 4, 2026.
Hydrant flushing is an important part of maintaining the reliability and quality of our water distribution system. During the process, crews will open selected fire hydrants to allow water to flow through the water mains at a high rate. This helps circulate fresh disinfected water throughout the system, remove naturally occurring sediment and mineral deposits that can accumulate in water mains, and maintain proper water quality.
The flushing program also provides an opportunity to inspect, operate, and service fire hydrants to help ensure they are functioning properly when needed for fire protection.
Flushing Schedule
- Flushing starts Monday, August 24, and ends Friday, September 4
- Flushing hours are 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday
Here’s What You Should Know

- If customers experience discolored water, they are encouraged to run a cold-water faucet for several minutes until the water becomes clear.
- Residents are also reminded to use caution when driving near water utility crews and active hydrant flushing operations,
