EWSU Uses Technology to Improve Road Closure Information for Evansville Drivers
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) is using innovative mapping technology to help drivers navigate construction-related road closures throughout Evansville and Vanderburgh County.
Through partnerships with the Waze Partner Feed program and Esri’s Community Maps Program, EWSU is connecting its road closure information with widely used navigation platforms, including Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze and TomTom.
The initiative builds on EWSU’s existing Project & Advisory Map, which provides residents with information about utility construction, road closures and other service-related activities. By sharing this information with navigation platforms, EWSU aims to help drivers identify closures and find alternate routes using the apps they already rely on.
The technology has already demonstrated promising results. During a recent closure on Boeke Rd, EWSU confirmed that the information appeared in Google Maps and Waze almost immediately after submission.
EWSU is also working to expand the initiative beyond utility construction projects. Its geographic information system (GIS) team is collaborating with other local government agencies to develop a standardized process for submitting road closure information and creating a shared municipal projects map.
The coordinated approach could help agencies identify overlapping construction projects, improve communication and reduce disruptions to residents and businesses.
